What is a declarations page and where do I find mine?
Your declarations page is the summary at the front of your insurance policy, usually the first page or two. It lists who is insured, what is covered, your limits, your deductibles, and what you pay. If you have found that, you have found the part of the policy most people actually need to read.
Where to look. Every renewal, your carrier sends a policy packet, by mail or email, and the declarations page sits at the top of it. If you cannot find the packet, log in to your carrier's website or app and look under policy documents. And if that fails, ask your agent to send it. Any agency can produce one in a couple of minutes.
Why this page matters more than the rest. The pages behind it are the legal contract, and almost nobody reads them. The declarations page is where your actual numbers live. On an auto policy, that means your liability limits, the ones that decide what happens if you cause a serious accident. On a homeowners policy, it means your dwelling limit, and your deductible, including whether that deductible is a flat dollar amount or a percentage of your dwelling coverage, which in Colorado hail country is a distinction worth thousands of dollars.
It is also the page to send when you want a second opinion on your coverage. When we ask people to send us what they have, this is the page we mean. Attach the PDF and the whole policy can be understood from it.
Once a year, when the renewal shows up, read the declarations page before you file it away. Five minutes there answers most of the questions people carry around about their insurance.
